Confusion in US as Netanyahu cancels Israeli delegation’s visit to Washington
The White House expressed surprise at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceling a planned visit by a delegation following the US’s decision to abstain from a UNSC vote on a Gaza cease-fire resolution. The US maintains its support for Israel in the conflict.
John Kirby, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, clarified that the resolution would not impact Israel’s ability to target Hamas and does not signify a policy change. The US continues to advocate for a cease-fire as part of a deal for hostages’ release and stands by Israel in its fight against Hamas.
Kirby criticized Netanyahu’s government, asserting that the US decides its own policy and there is no need for creating a perception of differences. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant’s visit is unaffected by the delegation cancellation, but discussions on an alternative plan for Rafah may not be as comprehensive as initially planned. The Biden administration remains committed to finding solutions with Israel.
