Couple in Lucknow arrested for torturing stray dog
Lucknow, April 4 (IANS) – A couple in Gomti Nagar brutally assaulted a stray dog by beating it, tying it to a bike, and dragging it. The incident, which occurred on April 1, was recorded in a viral video showing the man and woman involved in the cruelty.
DCP central Raveena Tyagi confirmed the arrest of the couple on Wednesday, followed by their release. An FIR was filed on April 2 based on a complaint from an animal activist Charu Khare. The couple faces charges under Sections 429, 504, and 506 of the IPC for mischief, insult, and criminal intimidation.
The horrifying incident left the dog with a broken front leg, as described by eyewitnesses who witnessed Jagdish tying the dog to his bike and dragging it while Sonam struck the animal with a stick. Charu Khare, who operates the NGO Aasra in Lucknow, recounted the details shared by a relative of the accused who provided first aid to the injured dog.
Despite the confrontation with the couple, Charu Khare managed to involve the police through a call to 112. The couple allegedly continued to misbehave, verbally abusing and threatening the officers even after their intervention. The motive behind the brutal assault on the dog was retaliation for biting their daughter during playtime outside their home.
The dog, currently in stable condition, is expected to recover within a month. A medical examination is scheduled for Thursday to monitor the progress of the stray dog’s recovery. The cruelty towards animals has sparked outrage and demands for justice among animal welfare activists in the region.
