CSIR-NIIST collaborates with VSSC for research on new materials for space programme

Thiruvananthapuram, March 20 (IANS) The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) has signed a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) to enhance research and delivery of advanced materials for India’s space programme. NIIST Director, Dr C Anandharamakrishnan and VSSC Director, Dr S Unnikrishnan Nair exchanged the MoU recently.

The agreement enables VSSC and CSIR-NIIST to identify areas of collaboration for developing materials like engineered alloys, coatings, and functional materials crucial for space programmes. CSIR-NIIST, known for its pioneering research, is set to benefit VSSC with its expertise in the field.

ISRO Chairman, Dr S Somanath emphasized the need to manufacture high-end materials, electronics, and composites to achieve self-reliance in space research. He highlighted the importance of focusing on areas such as high-grade composites and electronics manufacturing to lead the world in space technology.

Dr Anandharamakrishnan mentioned that the MoU will provide strategic materials for ISRO projects and ensure the delivery of components meeting ISRO specifications. The collaboration will cover areas like advanced manufacturing, smart coating, gas storage, and materials for electronic applications.

With the completion of Chandrayaan and Aditya-L1 missions, ISRO aims to develop advanced materials and indigenous technologies to support self-reliance in future space projects. The partnership between VSSC and CSIR-NIIST is expected to drive innovation and technological advancements in India’s space industry.
