Without Dahi Handi, also known as Utlotsavam or Gopal Kala, the Janmashtami festival would not be complete. Hindu mythology states that when Lord Krishna was a youngster, milk, curd, and white butter (makhan) were his nursery favorites. He used to take it from neighboring areas as well as other villagers with the help of his companions. For the same reason, the people began referring to him as “Makhan Chor,” or “Navneet Chor.”
The locals once complained regarding his stealing tendencies to his parents. Yashoda, Krishna’s adoptive mother, was furious and tied him up to prevent him from stealing. She also urged the locals to keep tiny Krishna out of reach by storing the freshly formed Makhan, or white butter, inside an earthen pot.
Bal Leela Makhanchor or Chhota Shri Krishna is connected with the Dahihandi celebration. Religious texts claim that because Lord Krishna adored butter so much, he and his associates used to steal it from the whole village of Gokul. Every grief is said to flee from the home where the pot was shattered for butter stealing, and only pleasure may buy joy.
Residents at Gokul started to fix the butter pot on just a high spot after being alarmed by his theft. Kanha used to do this to get to the pot and consume the butter by standing on his friends’ shoulders. This is where Dahi handi is thought to have started. The creator of the pyramid shape by humans is known as Govinda today.
Every year, on the festival of Krishna Janmashtami, groups form Dahi Handis to remember the adorable Krishna as a child. Although the day is commemorated across the nation with tremendous fervor, the tradition of Dahi Handi is especially exciting for the people of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
