Defence Minister to Launch Infrastructure Projects at Karwar Naval Base

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate several infrastructure projects at Indian Navy’s Karwar base in Karnataka on Tuesday as part of ‘Project Seabird’ phase-IIA. The projects include piers, residential towers, and dry berth, in line with Environment Ministry and IGBC guidelines, aimed at berthing 32 ships and submarines.

Project Seabird’s phase-IIA at Naval Base Karwar will feature piers for ships and submarines, a Covered Dry Berth towering at 75 meters, and four townships with residential accommodations for officers, sailors, and civilian staff. The construction also includes a Naval Air Station with a 2700-meter runway to support Indian Navy aircraft.

The projects are designed to accommodate 32 ships and submarines along with 23 yardcraft, with environmentally friendly buildings and structures. The initiatives at Naval Base Karwar have created job opportunities for around 7,000 personnel directly and approximately 20,000 jobs indirectly across the nation. The infrastructure aims to enhance operational capabilities and support naval activities in the region.
