Defenders’ Day, which honors the commemoration of the victorious defense of Baltimore throughout 1814 and the composition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” is recognized as the oldest celebration in Baltimore.
From September 9–11, 2022, park employees and partner organizations will offer programs and street protests to help visitors learn about the everyday life histories of the military men, seafarers, and innocent citizens who banded together just to safeguard their city to discover the background of Baltimore’s diverse population of defensive players.
There will be a tonne of activities on Saturday and Sunday, including flag-changing ceremonies, living history presentations, and a spectacular fireworks show on Saturday night that will emphasize the fort’s role in the War of 1812.
The Battle of 1812, often known as the Second Conflict of Independence, took place between the United Kingdom and the United States between 1812 and 1815. In Europe, this fight took place during the Napoleonic Wars. The American nation’s sovereignty was bolstered by the War of 1812.

Baltimore was approached by a British force on September 12, 1814. They were successful in forcing American forces to return to Baltimore’s main defenses, but the British experienced severe casualties, including the death of their commander, Major General Ross. Following this, on September 13, the British made an unsuccessful attempt to challenge Fort McHenry. The following morning, the British were compelled to leave.
Since 1815, Baltimore has commemorated the Siege of Baltimore and honored the valor of the “Old Defensive players.” Reenactors of the Siege of Baltimore, education about the lengthy history of American freedom, demonstrations and exhibitions, fireworks shows, and time spent with friends are typically all part of the celebrations and float displays.
