The primary version of COVID-19 was alpha, followed by beta, gamma, delta, and Omicron* currently causing worldwide havoc.

“Delta+Omicron = Deltacron” Explained

On Saturday, Researchers have claimed that a new strain of COVID-19 has come into existence and its first case has been reported in Cyprus. Their study shows the new strain combines at least 10 mutations of the Delta and Omicron variants. As a new strain combines two of the most harmful pre-existing COVID variants, this has been named “Delta+Omicron = Deltacron”.

Leondios Kostrikis, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus and Head of the Biotechnology and Molecular Virology Laboratory, said that this new COVID-19 strain ‘Deltacron’ was found in Cyprus.

Speaking to American-based news channel Bloomberg, Kostrikis explained that currently Omicron and Delta are co-infections and the new strain is a combination of the two types. He also explained that the new strain of coronavirus was named ‘Deltacron’ because of the identification of an omicron-like genetic signature within the delta genome.

As the new version was revealed just two days ago, there is still a lot of debate over whether ‘Deltakron’ is a real version or not. However, some experts have suggested that the new strains come through the sequencing laboratory and that contamination is not so uncommon because very small amounts of liquid can cause it. Therefore, DeltaCron may not pose a serious threat.
