Deployment of CAPF in West Bengal set to increase from initial 250 companies in phase 1

Kolkata, March 17 (IANS) – In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will begin with 250 companies in the first phase. The deployment will increase in subsequent phases, with the highest deployment in the seventh phase on June 1.

A senior official from the office of CEO, West Bengal, stated, “While 250 companies will be deployed for polls in three Lok Sabha constituencies in north Bengal in the first phase on April 19, the deployment will gradually increase in the subsequent phases, possibly reaching over 900 companies in the seventh phase.”

West Bengal CEO Ariz Aftab mentioned that the phase-wise deployment is based on the “vulnerability mapping” of polling stations. The goal is to ensure free and fair polls by considering past polling records for each constituency.

The decision to deploy 250 companies of CAPF in the first phase for just three constituencies in north Bengal highlights the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that no foul play is tolerated on the polling date.

In the seventh phase on June 1, where nine constituencies in south Bengal will go for polls, there are more “highly sensitive pockets” based on past records. These areas will see the maximum deployment of CAPF to maintain peace and security during the elections.
