Dev Diwali holds an unique position in the festival of Sanatan Dharma. It is being celebrated when the full moon is appearing in the Hindu month of Kartik during day time. As per the religious belief, it occurs exactly on the fifteenth day of Diwali when Lord Shiva killed the demon named Tripurasura, for which reason gods and sages considered celebrating lighting lamps in heaven. This tradition is followed till date and it is celebrated every year as Dev Diwali.
In the year 2024, the festival of Dev Diwali will be on 15 November. On this day, Kartik Purnima will commence at 06:19 and end at 14:58 on the night of November 16. Due to its special importance in Sanatan Dharma, the festival of the day will be celebrated on November 15 itself. Pradosh Kaal will start from 5:10 pm to 7:47 pm. This day is considered extremely fruitful in worship and lightening lamps.
Dev Diwali is celebrated on the killing of Tripurasura, when the powerful trident of Lord Shiva killed this demon. Worship and Vedic mantras’ chanting are fruitful on this day. Besides this, this day is also believed to be the birth anniversary of Lord Kartikeya. It is also on this day that, according to religious beliefs, the gods descend from heaven to earth and dispel the sufferings of their devotees and bestow their blessing on them.
On the day of Dev Diwali, there are rituals performed while worshiping in a special manner. On this day, it is of special importance to bathe in the Ganges, but if not possible to bathe in the Ganges, then bathing can also be done adding Ganga water at home. After which a lamp is lit by wearing clean clothes and worshiping Lord Shiva. In the evening, the practice of lighting a ghee lamp or oil near the main entrance of the house, courtyard, temple, and Tulsi plant is done. After doing the end worship, mantras are chanted, and aarti is performed; due to which the devotees get the desired fruits, and the fear also comes to an end.
Some special measures done on this day keep happiness, peace, and prosperity in the family. Like, lighting a lamp made of flour and clay and putting 7 cloves in it, which removes poverty. Making a garland of 11 leaves from the Tulsi plant and offering it to Lord Vishnu ends all the problems of life. In addition, cleaning the house and putting a toran on the main door, making rangoli, and sprinkling Ganga water help in removing financial problems.
Dev Diwali mainly takes place in the city of Kashi. On this day, people from all around gather to see the sparkle of millions of lamps on the Ganga Ghats of Kashi. Rows of lamps are spread all around, due to which the whole city of Kashi is illuminated with a divine aura. It is believed that on this day the gods and goddesses come to the banks of the Ganga and bless the devotees and remove all their troubles.
