Dhoni long ago realized that cricket is not everything, says Zaheer Khan

Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has shared his thoughts on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s interests beyond cricket. He mentioned that Dhoni understood the importance of having interests outside of the sport, stating, “Cricket is important but it’s not everything.”

Zaheer highlighted that Dhoni, who will lead CSK in the upcoming IPL season, recognized early on that cricket couldn’t be his sole focus. He emphasized the need for players to have interests beyond the game to ensure a successful transition post-retirement.

Regarding CSK’s performance under Dhoni’s leadership, the team has consistently been a strong contender in the IPL, making it to the playoffs twelve times in fourteen seasons. With five title victories, CSK shares the record for the most IPL trophies with Mumbai Indians.

Former cricketer Suresh Raina discussed succession planning at CSK, expressing his desire to see Dhoni continue playing in the IPL for another five years. Raina raised the question of who would be the next captain of CSK and speculated on potential options, including Ruturaj Gaikwad.

As CSK gears up to defend their title, the focus shifts to the team’s future planning, with Raina emphasizing the importance of grooming new leadership. The opening match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday will set the stage for another exciting season of IPL action.
