Dhruv Rathee Reveals Name Of Victim In Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case

As per a report by the Free Press Journal, the popular but often controversial influencer and activist shared “Justice For Nirbhaya 2” on X but later deleted it.

His actions were derided and condemned by netizens, who alleged that he had deleted the post after pressure from the ruling Trinamool Congress Government in West Bengal.

However, Dhruv Rathee has explained in a reply to an X user why he deleted the post.

Dhruv wrote:

“Because some people pointed out that it was insensitive to call (name hidden) Nirbhaya 2. I thought over it and felt that they were right.”

However, this time he came under even more criticism because he had mentioned the name of the victim in a hashtag while sharing the incident.

Dhruv Rathee wrote on X, adding a hashtag containing the victim’s name:

“The rape-murder case in West Bengal is heartbreaking. It exposes the inhumane working conditions for doctors, the lack of their safety, and the miserable state of law and order in West Bengal. Hope CBI does a fast track trial and gets justice (sic).”

Netizens pointed out that, as per law, the name of the rape victim should never be made public.

Well-known advocate Prashant Umrao wrote that the Supreme Court has clearly stipulated that even if the victim of rape is dead or in an unsound state of mind, the name of the victim or her identity must never be disclosed.

The highest court of the land even went a step further and stated that even with the authorization of the next of kin, the rape victim’s name must not be revealed.

A number of netizens also condemned Rathee for deleting his earlier posts.

Many have termed Dhruv Rathee’s actions as careless and insensitive.

The incident has once again opened the debate about the responsibilities of public influencers, especially when commenting on sensitive topics involving victims of heinous crimes.

Many critics also contended that Rathee’s actions, whether intentional or not, reveal a total lack of awareness and respect for laws controlling the reporting of sexual violence cases in India.

The horrific rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital has shocked the conscience of the nation.

The detained perpetrator of the crime, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is a repeat offender with a history of violence against women.
