Doctors note an increase in glaucoma cases among young individuals in India

New Delhi, March 16 (IANS) Glaucoma, the third most common cause of blindness in India is on the rise, particularly among young adults, according to doctors. World Glaucoma Week in March aims to raise awareness about early detection and treatment of the disease.

Reports and data show a significant increase in glaucoma-related blindness in India due to lack of awareness and delayed detection. Dr. Abhishek B Dagar from Venu Eye Hospital in New Delhi highlighted the silent progression of glaucoma, often leading to irreversible visual loss.

Glaucoma, also known as the silent thief, is asymptomatic until a late stage when the pressure in the eyeball damages the optic nerve. Without treatment, it can result in irreversible blindness, as explained by medical experts.

With nearly 11.2 million people aged 40 and above affected by glaucoma in India, it is essential to emphasize regular eye checkups to halt the disease’s progression. Dr. Suneeta Dubey from Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital warned that the disease can also affect young individuals due to various factors.

The importance of early detection and treatment of glaucoma cannot be understated in preventing irreversible blindness. Experts urge the public to prioritize regular eye checkups to ensure timely management of the disease and preserve vision.
