However, Donald Trump did not place his right hand on the Bible at the time of the oath-taking.
Donald Trump’s action sparked a huge reaction on social media, with many netizens calling his actions unbecoming of a president.
One user posted on X,
“He’s going to shred the Constitution; that’s why he wants to be a Dictator, not a president.”
Another user commented,
“He has no intention of following the Constitution.”
Commented one more,
“It was rushed unfortunately. Trump’s wife had no time before the swearing-in started.”
A fourth user was even more caustic and commented,
“Not saying otherwise… it would have been so much nicer if he would have put his hand on his 2 bibles! Nobody Trumps God! May God be with Donald Trump.”
Donald Trump, in his inaugural speech, asked for a return to common sense and also had an ominous warning.
He stated that he was going to issue several executive orders to change American politics to his preferred form.
Donald Trump, in his second inaugural speech, said,
“The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again worldwide. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer during every single day of the Trump administration.”
However, a question is being asked: Why does the US President take an oath of office on the Bible and not the US Constitution, and is it mandatory?
Donald Trump also took the oath and said,
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Well, there is no constitutional requirement for a Bible to be used when a US President is sworn in.
The President is required to take the oath of office and recite certain phrases which have been ordained in Article II, Section I, Clause 8 of the Constitution.
The rest is left up to those participating in the ceremony. The Bible is placed during the Oath-Taking Ceremony of the US President by tradition and popular culture.
The first US President, George Washington, took the oath before the Bible in 1789 and kissed it after he was sworn in.
