Indian Disability Cricket Team Defeats England 3-2 in T20 Series
The Indian physical disability cricket team emerged victorious in a hard-fought 3-2 T20 series against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium ‘B’ ground in Ahmedabad from January 28 to February 6. The team was led by para-cricketer Vikrant Keni, who also captained India to a 36-run win over England in the Physical Disability T20 World Series final in 2019.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Keni shared his thoughts on the series win, his cricketing journey, and the future of para-cricket in India.
Keni expressed his excitement at the opportunity to host the first-ever para-cricket series against England, noting the increased support and recognition for para-cricket in India. He credited organizations like DCCI, BCCI, and Svayam for creating opportunities for differently-abled cricketers to compete at an international level.
Despite being affected by polio, Keni has had a successful cricketing career, earning titles such as “Man of the Series” in various matches and drawing inspiration from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
He emphasized the crucial role of corporate employers in supporting and empowering para-players, recounting his own experience of receiving extensive support from his employer, which allowed him to lead the para-cricket team as captain.
Regarding the preparation for the series against England, Keni mentioned the rigorous training and the intense practice sessions that helped the team secure victory.
Keni also discussed the importance of promoting para-cricket in India, highlighting the need for increased government intervention, sensitization programs, and enhanced accessibility to foster inclusivity and diversity in sports.
Expressing gratitude to DCCI and BCCI for their support in promoting para-cricket, Keni shared the team’s goal of participating in the Physical Disability World Cup 2024 and their commitment to achieving new milestones in differently-abled cricket.
From the T20 series against England, Keni and his team learned the importance of proper planning and goal-oriented focus, emphasizing the significance of setting clear targets and aiming towards them with precision and determination.
Moreover, Keni emphasized the pivotal role played by Svayam in promoting accessibility and mobility for all, noting the organization’s contribution to fostering a positive environment for aspiring para-players and creating opportunities for increased participation in sporting activities at the grassroot level.
The series victory against England marks a significant milestone for Indian para-cricket, and the team is now looking forward to representing the country on different platforms and securing a place in the Physical Disability World Cup 2024, as they continue to strive for more triumphs in the future.
