Dutchman arrested in Dubai at the request of the Netherlands over footballer Promes

Dutch footballer Quincy Promes was arrested in Dubai at the request of Dutch authorities, convicted for drug trafficking and stabbing his cousin. The arrest came after constructive cooperation between the UAE and Netherlands, with a Red Notice issued for his apprehension.

Promes, sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for drug smuggling and previously received 1.5 years for stabbing, moved to Russia to avoid the Dutch authorities. However, his stay in Dubai with his club led to his arrest. The Netherlands will now seek his extradition.

The arrest was a joint effort by both countries, with the Dutch public prosecutor stating that Promes was living luxuriously in Dubai prior to his arrest. Additional information was not provided to prevent disruption of the ongoing investigation. The extradition treaty between Netherlands and UAE will facilitate his transfer for prosecution.
