Early detection key for effective endometriosis treatment, experts stress

New Delhi, March 17 (IANS) – Early detection is crucial for boosting treatment for endometriosis, often dismissed as painful periods, according to experts. Endometriosis, affecting roughly 190 million women worldwide, with 43 million in India, can lead to serious health implications.

Endometriosis is a painful gynaecological condition that affects millions of women globally. Early diagnosis and management can help slow down the disease’s progression and reduce long-term symptoms. Symptoms can vary, and timely identification is key to effective treatment, as per the World Health Organization.

Gayathri D Kamath, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Fortis Hospitals, highlighted the importance of recognizing symptoms like dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, chronic pelvic pain, severe backache, and infertility associated with endometriosis. Timely intervention can prevent complications and improve quality of life for women affected by the condition.

Vicky Makker, MD, Gynecologic Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, emphasized the link between endometriosis and endometrial cancer. Awareness and early detection efforts are crucial in addressing the rising incidence of endometrial cancer, especially among younger women. Recognizing risk factors and seeking prompt medical attention are key in managing the condition effectively.
