eBay 2024 Layoffs: 9% Full-Time Workforce Cut, Further Reductions for Contractual Employees Expected

Ebay's 2024 layoffs: CEO Jamie Lannone announces strategic changes, impacting 9% of full-time staff and addressing organizational shifts.

Layoff news might be concerning but has become a common trend since the 2020 recession. eBay, the renowned e-commerce platform, has come up with the news to fire 9% of full-time employees, or around 1,000 workers. In the coming months, eBay will also fire an unspecified number of temporary workers or contractors. The company announced that it sought change despite accumulating a profit of $1.3 billion in the last quarter of FY23.

The CEO and President of eBay, Jamie Lannone in an official press release, stated, “Our strategy is the right one, but there is more we can do to ensure our success. We need to better organize our teams for speed, allowing us to be more nimble, bring like-work together, and help us make decisions more quickly.”

Jamie Lannone’s statement also included cutting down the total population of the workforce by approximately 9% or 1,000 roles of full-time employees. Late Tuesday, in an internal memo, Jamie Lannone also added, “Additionally, we plan to scale back the number of contracts we have within our alternate workforce over the coming months.”

Currently, the e-commerce company is trying to implement organizational changes so that they meet the growing demands of customers around the world. The company said, “Leaders will communicate the news (of layoffs) directly via Zoom, and your VP or eLT member will send an email once the notifications in their group have been completed.”

Moreover, on January 24, the e-commerce platform also asked its employees in the U.S. to work from home to give some privacy and space for the layoff decision and conversation to take place. As per the reports, the CEO of the company has remarked on the current layoff as the toughest and most significant decision.

The Chief Executive Officer of the e-commerce platform said that they are exclusively committed to treating all of their employees with empathy and respect throughout this process. Moreover, the company will also provide the fired employees with resources and support.

He added, “While we are making progress against our strategy, our overall headcount and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business.”
