ECI Urges Bengal Police to Immediately Execute All Non-Bailable Arrest Warrants

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the West Bengal police to execute all pending non-bailable arrest warrants in the state promptly. The ECI team met with state officials, instructing them to send a report once the warrants are enforced and warned against the use of civic volunteers for poll-related duties.

During the meeting, the ECI team emphasized the need to prevent pre-poll violence and treat all complaints seriously. They specifically cautioned the Basirhat district police superintendent to exercise extra precautions in Sandeshkhali due to ongoing protests over alleged sexual harassment by local Trinamool leaders.

The Commission reminded police commissioners and district superintendents of previous allegations involving the misuse of civic volunteers during last year’s panchayat elections, which resulted in violence and casualties. It stressed the importance of upholding the law and maintaining peace during the upcoming elections.

The ECI’s visit to West Bengal aims to ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process in the state. With concerns over potential violence and irregularities, the Commission is taking proactive measures to maintain order and address any issues promptly.
