EFI announces national tent pegging team selection and begins preparations for World Cup

New Delhi, April 12 (IANS) With India securing a historic bronze in tent pegging in South Africa in 2022, the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) has selected the national team for the upcoming Tent Pegging World Cup qualifiers. Bonge Ganesh from the 61st Cavalry Regiment emerged as the top performer in the selection trials.

Ganesh scored 212 points out of 216, showcasing exceptional grit, skill, and focus. He was followed by Ganesh Warkhade with a score of 205.5. Former national champion Surendra and Abhishek also made it to the team along with Mohammed Rafik as a reserve member.

The five-member team will represent India at various international events, starting with a friendly event in Kazan, Russia from June 18-21. The EFI has pledged full support for the team in their preparation for the World Cup qualifiers in 2026.

EFI Secretary General Col Jaiveer Singh stated, “This team will be given all the required support to prepare for the Qualifiers this year. The top two riders will compete in the invitational event set to be held in Russia.”

The selection trials saw top-10 riders from the recent National Championships in Chandigarh engaging in various events like Individual Lance, Individual Sword, Lemon and Peg, and Ring and Peg over two rounds each.

Tent Pegging, a cavalry sport where riders pick a wooden block with a spear, was included in the Asian Games in 1982, where India clinched a gold medal. The sport has shown remarkable progress for India, with sights set on further success in upcoming international competitions.
