Egypt Sets Up Third Refugee Camp in Gaza Strip
Cairo, Feb 28 (IANS) Egypt is establishing a third refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and arranging a field hospital for Palestinians displaced by Israeli attacks, according to media reports.
The camp will be located in northern Deir el-Balah province in central Gaza, as stated by an Egyptian TV channel citing a security source. Egypt has already completed its second camp in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, equipped with 400 tents, toilets, water, and electricity for up to 4,000 people, Xinhua news agency reported.
Egypt’s aim is to assist the thousands of Palestinians who have been forced to flee their homes due to Israeli air strikes and artillery fire. The initiative comes after Israel launched a major offensive against Hamas following a Hamas raid across the border on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of about 1,200 Israelis and more than 200 hostages.
In addition to setting up refugee camps, the Egyptian Air Forces dropped 45 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, to north and central Gaza, as reported by Al-Qahera News TV. The Palestinian death toll in Gaza has reached 29,878 since the events on October 7, 2023, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
Israel stated that its military actions are targeted at Hamas militants and infrastructure, but there have been reports of civilian casualties. The establishment of the third refugee camp in the Gaza Strip is part of Egypt’s efforts to provide assistance to those affected by the conflict.
