Eid Al-Ghadir: History
Muhammad began the pilgrimage to Mecca when he migrated to Medina from Mecca. He also delivered “the Farewell Sermon” in Arafat Valley to more than 125,000 Muslims who gathered there.
On March 632 AD or Dhu al-Hijjah 18, Quran verse 5:67 was unveiled where the Muslims arrived at Ghadir Khumm.
When the verse was revealed, as per traditions followed by Sunni Muslims, Muhammad delivered a sermon. People were also asked to pledge allegiance to Ali.
A day later, Muhammad passed away. Notably, Abu Bakr was elected by a constitutional assembly instead of Ali.
Some of the individuals from the muslim community raised their voices on the issue that Ali was the rightful candidate to succeed Muhammad. Thus, this created a huge lacuna between Shias and Sunnis.
Thus, Eid Al-Ghadir is commemorated by Shia Muslims all over Bahrain, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Iran.
