Elkhart Martin’s Supermarket Shooting: Gunman Identified, Two Killed, Two Officers Injured

The identity of the Elkhart Martin’s Supermarket shooting has been established. The Elkhart County Prosecutor Vicki Becker on Tuesday released the name of the shooter as 54-year-old Juan M Sanchez.
The shooting left two people dead and the shooter was also shot dead by the responding police team. Two Police officers have also been injured in the shootout and are recuperating in a hospital.
Both the injured police officers are stated to be in stable condition.
Suspect Identified Behind Elkhart Martin’s Supermarket Shooting
The deadly mass shooting at the Martins Supermarket in Elkhart, Indiana on Monday left two Elkhart residents dead. The suspect has been identified as Juan M Sanchez
According to a press release by the Elkhart Police Department, the suspect had entered Elkhart through Indiana.
He was also spotted in the locality multiple times last year. The suspect is reported to have entered Martin’s Supermarket which is located on East Jackson Boulevard late Monday afternoon and started shooting indiscriminately.
His shooting led to the deaths of two people identified as a Martin’s employee and a customer.
Police responded to a 911 call at 5.30 pm and on moving into the premises of Supermarket discovered the bodies of 49-year-old customer Benjamin Jeffery and 19-year-old employee Annasue Rocha dead inside the market.
Sanchez was later spotted and shot dead after he started shooting at the responding Police officers.
Two Police Officers Corporal Paul Vandenburg and Patrolman Ethan Pasternak were injured during the incident. Pasternak is still hospitalized but is stated to be in stable condition.
The prosecutor’s office in a news release stated,
“The gunman fired multiple shots at responding officers, who returned fire, killing him,” stated the. Pasternak remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition.
Elkhart Police Department Chief Dan Milanese expressed deep pain and anguish felt by the close-knit community. Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson hailed the heroism of the two police officers who responded to the situation and were wounded in their line of duty.
He also asked people to pray for the victims as well as the wounded officers.
Gov. Mike Braun also in a statement said that he along with his wife Maureen are praying for the victims of the shooting. He added that he is in contact with the state and local law enforcement about the shooting.
The homicide unit’s investigation is currently looking into the actions of Sanchez and has asked citizens with information regarding this incident to call them at 574-295-2825.
