European Day of Languages is celebrated every year on 26 September. There is a resolve to express and promote linguistic diversity, raise awareness of the importance of language learning, and preserve the rich cultural and linguistic heritage in Europe. It gives an excellent chance to celebrate multilingual culture with its European tradition and introduce people to different languages and cultures. Thus, the event has been created by the joint efforts of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
Europe has 24 official languages. If we count regional and minority languages, over 200 are spoken on the European continent. Linguistic diversity is an essential part of European cultural heritage. The European Day of Languages helps raise awareness about this diversity and stimulates activities for the preservation of it. Today, it inspires people of all ages to learn languages and holds the opportunity to realize that language is not only a method of communication but also a means of acquiring new cultures and ideas.
The European Day of Languages dates back to 2001 when the Council of Europe proclaimed it as an annual event at the end of the European Year of Languages. The purpose is to make people realize how great it is to know one or more languages, to promote the rich cultural and linguistic diversity that makes Europe so diverse, and to encourage people to learn throughout their lives. The campaign encourages national education authorities and teachers to adopt a positive attitude towards language learning.
Liergas is going to conduct in the academic year 2024-2025 a competition for primary and secondary teachers, in partnership with eTwinning. This community consists of online schools across Europe so that teachers as well as their students could realize mutual language-learning activities. Winning schools in the 3 competitions of the European Day of Languages , several schools in Ireland demonstrate how creative and innovative they can be.
European Day of Languages 2024 Theme
The 2024 theme “Languages for Peace” recognizes that Europe’s linguistic diversity is a means of peace and cooperation. Languages create cultural bridges between peoples, leading to harmonious coexistence and peaceful life in societies, aside from being purely a means of communication. In this way, people are not only enabled to communicate in different languages but also understand other cultures and perspectives.
