The Finalists

As we have previously mentioned, the finalists of this year’s Champions League are German club Borussia Dortmund and Spanish club Real Madrid. In this section, we take a closer look at each team so you can get to know them more.

Real Madrid

History

Real Madrid, founded in 1902, is a Spanish football powerhouse based in Madrid. Renowned for its historic successes, the club has amassed a remarkable trophy cabinet, dominating both domestic and international competitions. However, it’s in the UEFA Champions League where Real Madrid truly shines. With a record 13 titles to their name and appearing in finals 17 times, with this being the 18th time, they stand as the most successful club in the tournament’s history.

Real Madrid’s journey in the Champions League is full of triumphs, marked by legendary players and iconic moments. From the dominance of the 1950s, when they clinched the first five European Cup titles, to the modern era’s Galácticos, featuring stars like Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo, their legacy is etched in football lore.

Road to The Final

Real Madrid’s road to the final has exemplified their dominance and ability to perform under pressure in the Champions League. They began the competition in a group with clubs Braga, Napoli, and Union Berlin. Real Madrid comfortably qualified after winning every game and scoring 16 goals.

In the round of 16, Real Madrid took on RB Leipzig and qualified after a win in the first leg followed by a draw in the second. The quarter-finals are where things got interesting for the Spanish club. They drew treble winners Manchester City and played the first game at the Santiago Bernabeu. This led to a very exciting game that ended 3-3. The second leg was played at the Etihad and finished 1-1 thanks to an equaliser from Kevin de Bruyne. In the penalty shoot-out, Modric missed the first penalty for Madrid; however, they were still able to qualify thanks to 2 saves from goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. They then took on Bayern Munich in the semi-final and drew the first game 2-2. Real Madrid look to be knocked out after a goal from Alphonso Davies; however, after an 88th equaliser and 91st-minute winner from Joselu, Real Madrid just qualified for the final.

Borussia Dortmund

History

Borussia Dortmund, formed in 1909, is a German football club based in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. The club rose to prominence in the 1990s under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, claiming their first Bundesliga title in 1995. Their most significant Champions League success came in 1997, when they defeated Juventus 3-1 in the final, securing their first and only Champions League title to date.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Dortmund remained a formidable force in European competitions; they reached the Champions League final again in 2013 under the guidance of coach Jürgen Klopp but fell short to Bayern Munich in an all-German final.

Despite occasional periods of rebuilding, Dortmund consistently qualified for the Champions League, showcasing their ability to compete among Europe’s elite. They’ve produced top talents like Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland, garnering admiration for their commitment to developing young players.

Road to The Final

Borussia Dortmund were placed in the ‘group of death’, a group which featured massive clubs PSG, AC Milan, and Newcastle United. They had a rough start, losing to PSG and drawing to Milan; however, 2 wins against Newcastle and a win against AC Milan away had them positioned 1st in the group. A draw against PSG then secured this position for the German side.

Borussia Dortmund started the knockouts by beating PSV 3-1 on aggregate before drawing Atletico Madrid. They lost the first game away 2-1. Then at home, they were able to put on a spectacular performance, beating Atletico 4-2 and winning 5-4 on aggregate. They then took on favourites PSG and dispatched them comfortably over 2 rounds. They won both games 1-0 to qualify for the finals.
