Experts emphasize One Health approach as integral to predicting and preventing future zoonotic outbreaks

New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) The government’s One Health approach is crucial for predicting and preventing future zoonotic disease outbreaks, according to health experts ahead of World Health Day on April 7. This year’s theme, ‘My Health, My Right,’ emphasizes equal access to quality healthcare.

Dr. Rohit Garg, from Amrita Hospital Faridabad, emphasized the importance of the One Health approach in recognizing the link between human, animal, and environmental health to prevent zoonotic diseases.

Experts highlighted India’s evolving capacity in managing infectious diseases, particularly evident in the country’s response to recent Covid-19 and Nipah virus outbreaks. Lessons learned from these events have helped improve preparedness for future pandemics, including potential threats like Disease X.

Gautam Menon, from Ashoka University, praised India’s efforts to expand laboratory networks, enhance surveillance for respiratory viruses, and implement a One Health approach to tackle emerging diseases. These steps, along with ramping up testing facilities and healthcare infrastructure, have been crucial in managing the Covid-19 pandemic.

India’s successful vaccination drive, which included the development of the indigenous vaccine Covaxin, showcased the country’s ability to mobilize vast resources and innovate under pressure, Dr. Rohit noted. Similarly, during Nipah virus outbreaks, India’s rapid response teams and containment measures demonstrated effective strategies in managing localized outbreaks.

Anurag Agrawal, from Trivedi School of Biosciences at Ashoka University, emphasized the post-pandemic transformation in India’s capacity for pathogen surveillance and pandemic prevention. The country’s improved scientific and health capacity, along with the establishment of new multi-stakeholder institutions for One Health, has enhanced its ability to control and prevent future disease outbreaks.
