Experts say obesity is crucial in reducing the risk of chronic diseases in both children and adults

Obesity is a significant health concern that needs to be addressed to prevent various non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and mental health issues. World Obesity Day is observed on March 4 to raise awareness about this condition. According to a recent global analysis published by The Lancet, more than 1 billion people worldwide are living with obesity. The numbers have more than doubled in the last three decades, with a significant increase among children and adolescents.

In India, the situation is even more alarming, with 12.5 million children and 70 million adults reported to be overweight in 2022. Dr. Gaurav Bansal, a Senior Consultant, emphasized the detrimental effects of obesity on health, linking its emergence to various factors such as environment, lifestyle, and culture. Dr. Vivek Bindal added that childhood obesity has significant implications for both immediate health and long-term well-being, affecting physical, psychological, and social aspects.

Obese children may face challenges like low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety, along with potential health issues like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular problems. Dr. Gaurav suggested emphasizing family dinners, limiting sugary drinks and fast food, managing portion sizes, and promoting physical activity to curb obesity in kids. Dr. S K Wagnoo stressed the importance of addressing obesity to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

Obesity increases the risk of diabetes by causing insulin resistance, inflammation, and dysregulation of fat metabolism. It can also lead to pancreatic stress and damage, affecting insulin production and contributing to the progression of Type-2 diabetes. High blood pressure and adverse lipid profile are other ways in which obesity poses risks for heart health. The experts recommended regular health check-ups, early intervention, community engagement, and awareness campaigns to address obesity-related health issues and break down societal stigmas associated with the condition.
