Finland School Shooting Update: 12-year-old Suspect Arrested as Three Children Injured

The Finland school shooting has currently invaded the media headlines. The incident occurred at Viertola primary school, in the city of Vantaa on Tuesday, reported Mint.
The news escalated as a child opened fire at the school, wounding three 12-year-old children in the shooting. Finnish police reported that this incident escalated near Helsinki, Finland’s capital, Helsinki.
According to YLE, the country’s public broadcaster, a 12-year-old suspect of the incident at the same school tried to leave the scene. However, the suspect was caught by police later in a northern Helsinki suburb.
YLE said that police officers were asked to report the Viertola school from around 9 a.m. local time to 2 a.m. ET.
The broadcaster reported that, until now, police have not “provided details about the nature or severity of the injuries, nor what type of firearm was used.”
According to CNN, authorities requested people to remain indoors and avoid going to school. Moreover, students were urged to stay inside their respective classrooms following the shooting.
Viertola primary school is located in the city of Vantaa and lies about 11 miles or 18 kilometers north of the capital, Helsinki. The school has approximately 90 staff members and 800 students from 1st to 9th grade.
Petteri Orpo, Prime Minister of Finland, regarded the shooting as “deeply shocking.”
Orpo went to X and wrote, “My thoughts are with the victims, their families and the other students and staff of the Viertola school.”

BBC reported that school shooting in Finland is extremely rare even though it has one of the biggest traditions of gun ownership rates and hunting.
Similar school shooting incidents also occurred in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, an 18-year-old schoolboy, Pekka-Eric Auvinen opened fire, wounding 10 people and killing 8 others. This incident occurred in the town of Tuusula.
In 2008, a 22-year-old Matti Juhani Saari opened fire, killing 10 people, and then killed himself at another school in Finland.
