Four dead, 97 injured in Taiwan after powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake strikes

Four people were killed and 97 others sustained injuries in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in Hualien, Taiwan. The earthquake occurred on Wednesday morning, prompting a red alert for tsunami to be issued.

The earthquake was epicentered at 23.81 degrees north latitude and 121.74 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 12 km. Strong tremors were felt in various parts of Taiwan, leading to the halt of Taipei’s metro system operations.

According to Taiwan’s meteorological agency, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck at 7:58 a.m. on Wednesday. The epicenter was located 25 km south-southeast of the Hualien county government, with the maximum intensity recorded at 6 magnitude in Hualien County.

The earthquake was followed by aftershocks, with two quakes measuring 6.0 and 5.9 magnitudes respectively within around 40 minutes, with epicenters monitored in nearby areas. The impact of the earthquake has caused significant damage and loss of life in Hualien, Taiwan.
