Four IS militants slain in the deserts of Iraq

Baghdad, March 11 (IANS) – Iraqi security forces have successfully eliminated four Islamic State (IS) militants in a recent operation in central Iraq. According to the Iraqi military, paramilitary fighters from tribal forces affiliated with the Iraqi Hashd Shaabi forces engaged in a deadly clash with the militants in the Tharthar desert.

The incident occurred during a joint operation conducted by the Iraqi army, police, and Hashd Shaabi forces to hunt down IS militants in the provinces of Salahudin, Nineveh, and Anbar. The Security Media Cell, a media outlet affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, stated that the Iraqi forces possess “accurate intelligence information” about the whereabouts of terrorists and are determined to eliminate them in every inch of the Iraqi desert.

In a recent statement, it was revealed that the Iraqi forces have already killed a total of ten extremist militants in the Tharthar desert over the past 24 hours. This includes the successful airstrikes carried out by Iraqi warplanes on six IS militants hiding inside a tunnel.

The security situation in Iraq has seen improvement since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, IS remnants continue to pose a threat as they have infiltrated urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians. The efforts to eradicate IS militants from Iraq’s desert regions remain ongoing, as the Iraqi forces remain vigilant in their pursuit of peace and security.
