France to host allied conference to reaffirm support for Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to host a conference for Kiev’s partners on Monday to strengthen allied commitment to Ukraine as the full-scale war enters its third year. The meeting aims to reaffirm unity in defeating the war of aggression by Russia in Ukraine.
Ukraine is facing challenges in early 2024, with delays in US aid causing ammunition shortages leading to the Ukrainian withdrawal from the frontline city of Avdiivka. Russia has increased pressure along the front, raising defense spending and securing military assistance from partners like North Korea and Iran.
The meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m. local time, is an opportunity for allies to send a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Macron’s advisor stated, “Our goal is to crush this idea he wants us to believe that he would be somehow winning.”
French President Macron aims to present himself as a champion of the pro-Ukrainian coalition amid waning US support. Ukraine’s President Zelensky is expected to deliver an opening address via video conference with 20 European leaders and representatives from the US and Canada attending.
While new aid deliveries will not be announced during the meeting, a focus will be on brainstorming more effective support and improving coordination between Kiev and its allies. France recently committed 3 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine this year along with additional assistance packages.
