Freedom Day (South Africa) 2022: Current Theme, History, Significance, Celebrations, And More

Every Year April 27 is marked as Freedom Day in South Africa to commemorate the first non-racial democratic elections that took place on April 27, 1994. The day has great importance for the South African people as it marked the installation of a country’s first democratic government led by Nelson Mandela, and a new state subject to a new constitution. Nelson Mandela served as the President of South Africa from 10 May 1994 to 16 June 1999.

South Africa Freedom Day 2022 Theme

The Anniversary of the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation, and white minority rule is a month-wide celebration in the country. The whole month of April is marked as Freedom Month in South Africa. In 2022 Freedom Month will be observed under the theme: “Consolidating Our Democratic Gains”.

History

The 1994 elections were the country’s first non-racial national elections, where everyone over the age of 18 has the right to vote, regardless of race group. Previously, under the apartheid regime, non-whites, in general, had only limited rights to vote while black South Africans had no voting rights.

Celebrations

South Africa Freedom Day is a day of companionship that encourages all people to celebrate the joys of life and remembers those who devoted their entire lives to the dreams we are living today.

Families enjoy special meals on this day such as Barbecue chicken. Parades and Street Parties are organized locally to commemorate this day. People also like to visit places and monuments associated with democracy struggles.
