Georgia Institute of Technology was founded in 1885. The Research Institute became active in 1934 and admitted women first time in 1952. The university also opened campuses in Metz, Lorraine, France in 1991.

In 1948, the University changed its name to represent a trade school and technical institute. Today, Georgia Tech have six colleges and 31 departments of science and technology. It also has degree programs in computer science and engineering.
