Even though the name suggests that the cake was developed in Germany, this is not the case. The cake has its origins in 1852 when American Sam German created dark baked chocolate for the American Baker’s Chocolate organization. Sam German was honoured with Baker’s German Sweet Chocolate brand.

Over a century later, in 1957, the Dallas Morning Star published a description of “German’s Chocolate Cake” as its Menu of the Day. Mrs George Clay’s recipe, which called for Baker’s German’s Dark Chocolate, was a hit. Mrs Clay’s recipe was disseminated to certain other daily newspapers by General Foods, which owned Baker’s at the time. As newspapers dropped the’s, the phonetic pronunciation of German Chocolate Cake emerged.
