Global 5G smartphone shipments crosses 2 bn units in Q4 2023: Report

Global cumulative shipments of 5G smartphones surpassed 2 billion units in Q4 2023, with Apple and Samsung leading the pack, as per a report by Counterpoint Research. Achieved in less than five years, significantly faster than 4G. Analysts attribute this to the narrowing price gap between 5G and 4G chipsets, making 5G more accessible.

Around 70% of 5G shipments came from developed markets, with Apple and Samsung shipping over 1 billion units collectively. Smartphone brands heavily promoted 5G capabilities to stand out in a competitive market. The iPhone 12 series’ launch accelerated 5G adoption, with global shipments exceeding 100 million units in Q4 2020, hitting 200 million units in Q4 2023.

Analysts anticipate emerging markets like India and Southeast Asia to fuel the next wave of 5G smartphone shipments, as they are equipped to cater to affordable segments. The increased affordability and strategic component selection by OEMs contributed to the success of 5G technology in the smartphone market.
