Goalkeeper Panthoi Chanu makes history as the first Indian footballer to play in an Australian league

Indian women’s national team goalkeeper, Panthoi Chanu, is set to make history by becoming the first Indian footballer to play professionally in Australia. She secured a contract with Metro United WFC after impressing during the ‘Women in Sports Elite Football Trials, second edition.’

Chanu’s deal with Metro United WFC will see her represent the team in the South Australian Women’s National Premier League until September 2024. Her achievement follows in the footsteps of three other Indian players who have secured contracts abroad, marking a significant milestone for Indian women in football.

Australia has seen a surge in support for women’s football, with record-breaking attendance at recent matches involving the national women’s team, the Matildas. This move to Australia presents a significant opportunity for Chanu to showcase her skills on a global platform and continue to elevate women’s football.

Adelaide United FC identified Chanu during a trial attended by head coaches from various prominent teams, leading to her signing with Metro United WFC. Head Coach Paul Morris expressed his excitement about having Chanu on the team, highlighting her international experience and qualities as a goalkeeper.
