Goa’s Liberation Day 2024 Quotes, Images, Messages, Wishes, Posters, Banners and Sayings

The Indian independence movement was a long struggle of several decades, including the First War of Independence of 1857 and Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March. When India finally emerged from British slavery on 15 August 1947, Goa was still under Portuguese rule. This continued for 14 years. After Goa was liberated on 19 December 1961, this day is celebrated every year as Goa Liberation Day.

The Portuguese occupied Goa for almost 450 years beginning with the year 1510. In the 15th century, Goa was conquered by the Portuguese to obtain control over India’s maritime trade routes. They imposed their administration, culture, and religious activities in the region.

Even after India’s independence in 1947, the Portuguese regime refused to hand over Goa to India. They claimed that Goa is a part of Portugal, and there is no basis to associate it with independent India.

On 18 June 1946, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr. Juliao Menezes blew the trumpet of the Goa Liberation Movement. The aim of this movement was to inspire the residents of Goa to fight for freedom. Though the Portuguese regime attempted to suppress this movement, it became a source of inspiration for the youth and citizens of Goa.

Goa remained under Portuguese occupation till 1961. At that time, the Government of India had made several diplomatic efforts, but the Portuguese regime did not budge. When the Portuguese, in November 1961, fired on Indian fishermen and tried to take the villagers as hostages, the Government of India decided to take stiff action.

The Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Vijay on 18 December 1961. It was a 36-hour military operation in which the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy all participated. The Portuguese army gave up after a little resistance, and Goa gained independence on 19 December 1961.

After Goa became independent in 1961, it was granted the status of a Union Territory of India. Goa, Daman and Diu fell under the same administrative unit. But on 30 May 1987, Goa attained the status of a full state and became the 25th state of India. Daman and Diu remained a Union Territory.

Goa Liberation Day is a historical day but also the memorial of freedom fighters and valour of Indian Army. On this day, Goans pay homage to all those heroes who fought for the independence of Goa without thinking even about their lives.
