Google running 'racist, anti-civilisational programming' with its AI: Musk

New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) – Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has accused Google of running “racist, anti-civilizational programming” with its artificial intelligence (AI) models. The controversy erupted after Google paused the ability for Gemini AI to generate images of people due to inaccuracies in AI-generated historical images.

In a statement, Musk wrote, “I’m glad that Google overplayed their hand with their AI image generation, as it made their insane racist, anti-civilizational programming clear to all.” This follows the controversy over images generated by Gemini AI depicting specific white figures as “people of colour” and Nazi-era German soldiers.

Google acknowledged that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in historical image generation depictions. The company’s product lead, Jack Krawczyk, stated that Gemini’s image-generating skills are designed to “reflect our global user base.”

Musk also targeted Krawczyk, stating, “This nut is a big part of why Google’s AI is so racist & sexist.” Additionally, the tech billionaire noted that he did a Google search on his phone and noticed that the “top two choices are pro-censorship.”

Google launched image generation via its Gemini AI platform earlier this month. The controversy highlights the ongoing challenges and ethical considerations associated with the development and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies.

This incident has raised concerns about the potential biases and inaccuracies in AI-generated content, as well as the responsibility of tech companies to prioritize accuracy and cultural sensitivity in the development of AI models.

The accusations by Elon Musk against Google’s AI models and the controversy over inaccuracies in AI-generated historical images have sparked a debate on racial biases and ethical considerations in AI development. This incident underscores the need for rigorous oversight and ethical guidelines to address potential biases and inaccuracies in AI technologies.
