This significant Hindu festival Govardhan Puja takes place on the Pratipada date of the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month, exactly after Diwali. A person worshiped Govardhan mountain on this day according to the legend of how once Lord Krishna had lifted up Govardhan mountain with his little finger. It is believed that Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan mountain on his little finger to protect his devotees from the wrath of rain god Indra, in such a way that for seven days Brajvasis were able to safely sit under the shade of the mountain. After the incidence Lord Krishna stopped the worship of Indra and began worshiping Govardhan and it is continued even till today by the Brajvasis.
On this day, cow dung is molded in peculiar shapes of cows, calves and Braj which is offered puja. On the courtyard of a home, Govardhan Maharaj is made ready in an idol to whom, flowers, puffed rice, batasha, paan and annakut are offered. Govardhan is circled in front of by the members who praise Krishna with their voice singing bhajans. It is also known as Annakoot, where in the form of Annakoot, different vegetables and grains are prepared and presented in front of God.
In 2024, the day of Govardhan Puja will be observed on 2 November. The sacred time will fall from 6 am to 8 am and further at 3:23 pm to 5:35 pm. Govardhan Puja depicts that one must worship nature; by doing so, humanity shows its respect and respect to nature.
