Grand Mufti of India urges Centre to reconsider stance on CAA

The Grand Mufti of India, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, has expressed deep concern over the recent implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) by the Central government, urging them to reconsider the decision. The Act utilizes religion as a criterion for citizenship, which is fundamentally at odds with the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Grand Mufti highlighted the potential division among citizens due to the legislation. He emphasized the importance of unity and integrity for the progress and prosperity of the nation, questioning the enactment of laws that discriminate on the basis of religion and identity while striving for global recognition.

The Grand Mufti called for the Union government to reconsider its stance on CAA and retract the divisive legislation. He stressed the values of inclusivity and pluralism that India stands for, urging the government to uphold the ideals of equality and justice for all citizens, regardless of their religion or background.

Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, as the most senior and influential religious authority of the Sunni Muslim community in India, plays a crucial role in advocating for unity and respect among citizens. His plea to the government to revisit the decision on CAA reflects the concerns of many who believe in the principles of a secular and inclusive society.
