Gudi Padwa is an auspicious festival in the state of Maharastra. The day marks the official beginning of the New Year as per the Luni-Solar calendar. This year, i.e. 2024 it will be celebrated on 9 April 2024.
Those who are planning to conduct puja must note the time. According to Pratipada Tithi (the first lunar day) for Gudi Padwa, the timing for puja will start at April 8 at 11:50 PM and end on April 9 at 8:30 PM.
As stated above, it is a celebration of the beginning of the new year meaning time for the new harvest and positivity. Devotees decorate their homes with garlands, neem leaves as well as mango twigs along with a silver pot. It symbolises victory and seeking prosperity from God.
The festival is a perfect infusion of fun time and tradition. Devotees start their day with an oil bath offering and praying to God. Many tend to consume neem leaves as it is believed it has medical power that can help to achieve long-lasting good health. New clothes are adorned, gifts are exchanged with family and friends while diving into mouth-watering food.
Some of the traditional foods include Pooran Poli (a stuffed flatbread), Shrikhand (a sweet yoghurt dish) and Poori (deep-fried flatbread) as well as refreshing drinks such as Sundried Lime Juice (Sonth Panak).
The term Gudi means flag or say emblem of the Hindu Lord Brahma while Padwa means the first day of the new moon. The festival is celebrated with full dedication and enthusiasm in Maharashtra. The entire city lit up with lights and dhol noises.
