Gujarat Giants’ coach Klinger: We’re still in WPL 2024, but there’s work to be done

Bengaluru, March 2 (IANS) Despite losing all their three matches in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) so far, Gujarat Giants’ head coach Michael Klinger believes his team still has a chance to qualify for the knockouts. In their latest match, they suffered a six-wicket loss to UP Warriorz, leaving them at the bottom of the points table.

Klinger expressed disappointment with the team’s start but remains hopeful. He emphasized the importance of winning at least four out of the remaining five games to have a shot at making it to the finals. The coach praised captain Beth Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt’s intent but acknowledged the need for better execution in crucial moments.

Acknowledging the challenge in finding the right balance in the playing eleven, Klinger highlighted the team’s struggle with the batting order due to a three-overseas, three-locals dilemma. He stressed the importance of backing the local players while also urging for discipline in bowling and fielding to avoid giving away easy runs to the opposition.

The standout performer for Gujarat Giants has been left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar, who has impressed with five wickets at an average of 12.8. Klinger commended Kanwar’s energy and contribution both with the ball and the bat, labeling her as a crucial asset to the team’s campaign. Despite the setbacks, Klinger remains optimistic about the team’s prospects in the tournament.
