Gujarati New Year is a festival of immense enthusiasm, happiness, and joy across Gujarati people and the state of Gujarat. In 2023, this day falls on November 14, 2023, Tuesday. Gujarati New Year marks the starting of a nava barsha or new year for the people of Gujarati origin. This celebration for this day begins in the month of Kartik on Shukla Paksha Pratipada, which is the following day of Diwali.
Gujarati New Year Name
Gujarati New Year is popularly known as ‘Bestu Varas.’ However, it is also called simply ‘Padwa’ or ‘Varsha-Pratipada.’ Sometimes, it is also known as Gujarati Nav Varsh. The term ‘Bestu Varas’ also means ‘new year.’
History and Significance
The story associated with the celebration of Gujarati New Year relates to the belief that when Lord Krishna saw the people of Gokul preparing and offering prayers to Lord Indra, he convinced them that as shepherds and farmers, the main duty of the people of Gokul are to protect their cattle and do farming to the best of their abilities.
Lord Krishna also made them understand that for a natural phenomenon to occur, the people of Gokul should not worship Lord Indra. As a result of which, they cease to venerate Lord Indra.
Rather, they started worshipping the cows and the Govardhan Hill on Lord Krishna’s advice. This made Lord Indra furious, due to which he flooded the village of Gokul with continuous rain for seven nights and seven days. Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Parbat on his little finger and gave safety to the people of Gokul along with the cattle and crops. Sooner, Lord Indra apologized to Lord Krishna when the former realized his mistake.
Since then, worshipping Govardhan Hills has become a tradition. Thus, Gujarati people celebrate the day as New Year. Rituals and customs of Govardhan Puja are carried out with utmost zeal and endeavor to welcome Gujarati New Year or Navu Varsh.
