Guru Nanak Jayanti is a festival to mark the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This festival comes on the full moon day of Kartik Masam. In 2024, Guru Nanak Jayanti will fall on 15 November and marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Ji which happens to be the 555th year. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in the year 1469; he founded Sikhism. His name was Nanak, but he came to be known as Guru Nanak.
Guru Nanak Jayanti is called Prakash Parv because Guru Nanak Ji is said to have lit a firework of knowledge and unity in society. The day is celebrated by holding special events in the gurdwaras. Among these special events are Akhand Paath and Bhajan-Kirtan, besides the Langar programme of the Sikhs, which provides food to the needy. The day is celebrated for three days, and the occasion is special for the Sikhs.
During Guru Nanak Jayanti, people recall the messages of Guru Nanak Dev Ji; especially “Ik Omkar” (God is one), the basic principle of Sikhism; he raised his voice against the evils that prevailed in society and did lot of work for devotion, equality, and social reform.
Now, on this day, grand celebrations are arranged, especially in Punjab and other Sikh-dominated areas, and people from the Sikh community around the world visit Gurudwaras and offer prayers. Additionally, this festival also portrays religion, unity, and service.
On this festival, special worship and service programs are arranged in Gurudwaras not only in India but also in Britain, America, Canada, and other countries to mark the anniversary.
