The festival is known as Guru Nanak Jayanti or Prakash Parv. It marks the birthday anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and its first guru. The festival falls on the full moon day of the month Kartik every year, about 15 days after Diwali. Guru Nanak Jayanti falls in the year 2024 on 15 November. It would be the 555th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This day is held in great reverence and pomp by the Sikh community.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 at Talwandi, which is now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan. His real name was Nanak, but he was considered the first Guru in Sikhism. Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s philosophy is based on “Ik Omkar,” which means “God is one.” He strived to spread the light of knowledge in society and give the message of unity to humanity. His teachings are true now and promote harmony and love in society.
Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated for three days. During this period, Akhand Paath (continuous recitation of Guru Granth Sahib) is held in the Gurudwaras. On the first day, a procession called ‘Prabhat Pheri’ is taken out where devotees come out of the Gurudwara singing kirtans. On the second day, ‘Nagar Kirtan’ is organized wherein the holy book of the Sikhs, Guru Granth Sahib, is carried in a palanquin and is taken out in a procession. The procession boasts of bhajans and kirtans as it conveys the messages of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Langar is arranged on the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti. The concept was introduced by Guru Nanak Dev Ji who wanted to teach that people belonging to every class of society can sit together and eat food. People go to the Gurudwaras, serve there, participate in bhajans and kirtans, and feed needy people.
He spent his whole life spreading social evils and ills among the society. He laid down messages of equality and unity by opposing casteism, bigotry, and social discrimination. His intentions were that he would uplift harmony in the society and justice according to his thoughts and teaching.
