Indian Gymnast Pranati Nayak Wins Bronze at FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup
India’s Pranati Nayak secured a bronze medal in the women’s vault event at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup 2024 in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday. Her compatriot, Dipa Karmakar, finished fifth in the same event.
Pranati Nayak, who previously competed in the Tokyo Olympics, achieved an average score of 13.620 and became only the third Indian to win a medal at the FIG World Cup series. Dipa Karmakar narrowly missed the podium, finishing with a score of 13.380 in the final.
An Chang-Ok of the Democratic People’s Republic Korea claimed the gold medal with an average score of 14.230, while Bulgaria’s Valentina Georgieva took home the silver. Pranati qualified for the vault final after finishing seventh in the qualifiers and improved her performance to secure the bronze medal in the medal round.
The FIG World Cup Cairo 2024 is the first leg of the series, with the remaining three legs to be held in Cottbus, Germany, Baku, Azerbaijan, and Doha, Qatar. The top two highest-ranked gymnasts per gender for each apparatus, provided they have not previously qualified and are eligible, will obtain Paris 2024 Olympic quotas via this path.
India’s Ujwal Naidu, Tapan Mohanty, and Rakesh Patra also participated in the men’s events in Cairo, but none of them made the medal round. The FIG World Cup series serves as a qualifying event for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, with the points from the best three performances out of the four qualifying events considered towards the Olympic Games qualifying.
