The genesis of these rumours can be traced to a post on X by a social media user with more than 24,000 followers, who broke the news that Hailey Welch was found dead.
The 22-year-old influencer’s viral death news has, however, not been confirmed by any media outlet or news channel. However, the news is continuously being churned on social media platforms, causing deep distress to Welch’s followers.
For the unversed, Hailey Welch got the name “Hawk Tuah Girl” after her “Hawk Tuah” clip went viral. Hailey Welch launched her meme coin $HAWK on the Solana Blockchain platform.
However, the value of the meme coin touched $500 million and then tanked to $60 million in the space of 20 minutes.
Many experts have dubbed this as a massive scam and alleged that a rug pull has been effected. Rug pull is a process by which scammers buy major portions of any meme coin, causing a brief scarcity and artificially inflating the prices.
The scammers then sell the tokens en masse, leading to a crash since there is a surplus of tokens. The scammers make a hefty profit while it is the common investor who faces the brunt of the financial loss.
There have been talks that Welch could face legal challenges, and a number of legal firms have asked the investors who have been duped to visit them so that they can initiate legal proceedings.
Welch and the managers of the meme coin $HAWK have, however, denied any wrongdoing. They also stated that no free tokens were given to any cryptocurrency influencers.
