Hanukkah is a Jewish festival celebrated by the Jews community around the world. It is also known as the Festival of Lights. There are many traditions related to the festival such as decorating the house with lights and other items.
Menorah is light and Hanukkah blessings are recited. Hanukkah games dreidel are played with family and friends. People exchange gifts with loved ones. Delicious food is prepared. This year it will be celebrated on 7 December and will end on 15 December.
The date is finalised based on the lunisolar calendar so it changes every year. Mostly the festival is observed in December or November.
The celebration of Hanukkah is related to the rededication of the Holy Temple after it was reclaimed by the Jewish people in the Syrian Greeks in the second century BCE. While restoring the temple, workers used an oil lamp, the oil in the lamp was not enough to last even one day but it lasted for eight straight days. This is what the Hanukkah miracle is considered.
Hanukkah is a Hebrew word meaning dedication. The holiday is a celebration of rededication to the Temple. According to ancient customs and beliefs, around 2000 years ago, Jews dedicated their life to restoring their temple. Even today, Jews remember their roots and thank their ancestor for keeping their faith in the religion.
The day is observed by lighting a Menorah. Each night one more candle is added making it eight candles on the last day. A candelabra commemorates the menorah in the Holy Temple. The day is celebrated with full dedication and enthusiasm. It is mostly observed in Israel and, the U.S.A.Canada and a few parts of Europe.
