Hanukkah, more commonly referred to as the Festival of Lights, is an important holiday in Judaism that marks the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and represents religious freedom, which was regained after the miracle of a little oil lasting for eight days. A joyous festival that begins December 25, 2024 sundown and ends January 2, 2025 the Maccabees victoriously defeated the Seleucid Empire and restored Jewish life with the rebuilding of traditional life after the desecration of their sacred temple by outsiders.
The lighting of the menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum, is the central ritual of Hanukkah. Each night, one additional candle is lit using the shamash, the central candle, until all eight candles are lit on the final night. This symbolizes the miracle of the oil that lasted longer than expected, enabling the rededication of the temple. Families often gather to recite blessings, sing songs, and enjoy festive meals.
Hanukkah is the time of games and fun by spinning the dreidel that is a four-sided top with Hebrew letters spelling to the phrase “a great miracle happened there.” Further, there are special foods as latkes, potato pancakes fried in oil, and doughnuts, sufganiyot, fried in oil, reminding of the miracle. There is also interchanging of gifts, thus bringing communities together to mark religious freedom, perseverance and the joy of family.
Across the globe, Jewish communities, including those in India, celebrate Hanukkah with unique regional traditions. In Kolkata, Kochi, and Delhi, Jewish families observe the holiday with local foods like Malida (flattened rice), adding a special cultural touch to the festival.
In Israel, it is a national holiday and includes public menorah lightings, plays, concerts, and an annual torch relay from Modi’in to Jerusalem. This festival not only commemorates a defining historical moment but also brings hope, faith, and unity to Jewish communities around the globe.
