Hanukkah 2024 Wishes, Images, Messages, Quotes, Greetings, Cliparts, Sayings and Captions
Hanukkah 2024 is scheduled to start at sundown on Wednesday, December 25, and will end the evening of Thursday, January 2, 2025, for eight days of celebration. This Festival of Lights celebrates the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 BCE and the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. A central theme of the holiday is the miracle of oil—what was supposed to be enough for just one night of light lasted for eight.
The observances of Hanukkah include lighting the menorah, which is a nine-branched candelabrum. One additional candle is lit each night with the shamash, or helper candle, until all eight candles burn brightly on the final evening. The lighting of the menorah is often accompanied by prayers, songs, and family gatherings.
Besides the lighting of the menorah, Hanukkah traditions have playing dreidel, the four-sided spinning top, exchanging gifts, and especially eating foods fried in oil; latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (doughnuts) especially to symbolize the miracle of the oil. The Indian Jewish community has Malida, flattened rice and other special foods.
In both Jewish defiance and the strength of faith and community, Hanukkah reminds us that no flame can be snuffed forever. Whether in the glows of the menorah or the joy of giving during a day that’s often full of excitement-whether it’s through games of dreidel-the light of the festival illuminates all who participate in the warmth of the spirit of Hanukkah.
