This year Akshaya Tritaya will be observed on April 22, 2023. The festival is also known as Akti or Akha Teej and is celebrated by both Hindus and Jains with deep religious gaiety and pomp. As per the Hindu traditions the festival is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the month of Vaishakha as per Hindu Panchang.

The genesis of Akshaya word comes from the Sanskrit word which means inexhaustible. Therefore praying on the day to Lord Vishnu on this day will bring unending benefits and bring prosperity all round the year. There will be bountiful crop and no one will go hungry.

Akshaya Tritiya Legend

One such legend goes that Draupadi along with her Pandava husbands were wandering in the forest after being sent to exile when Yudashtra lost to Kauravas in a game of dice his entire kingdom. The Pandavas were left famished and taking pity Mother Annapurna gave them the Akshay patra with inexhaustible food but with one rider-The Patra will stop producing food after Draupadi had her meals. One day Sage Durvasa visited the Pandavas and asked them to feed his entourage. Draupadi had partaken food and the vessel supply of food was exhausted for the day.

Sage Durvasa was known for his extremely volatile temper and Draupadi was in terror. She earnestly prayed for divine help from Lord Krishna who appeared immediately and demanded food. Draupadi was in tears when she found out of instead helping her in her predicament Lord Krishna was making fun of her. However Lord Krishna found a morsel of rice which he ate and all the hunger of Sage Durvasa and his disciples were fulfilled. Thus even one morsel must not be wasted as it can feed the entire universe.

The day also has a special significance for unmarried boys and girls. The boys and girls pray for good life partners and pray. They distribute germinating gram (sprouts), fresh fruits and sweets. They also fast for the day and have satvic and falahar which include roots and fruits.

In Jain tradition the day is commemorated as the day when the first Tirthankar , Rishabdeva ended his one year penance during which he fasted and on Akshaya Tritiya he broke his fast by having sugarcane juice. The followers of Jain tradition also visit pilgrimage sites like Palitana (Gujarat). Some Janis also observe strict Brahmacharya and alternative day fasting for a whole year and break the fast known as Varshi-tap by having sugarcane juice.
